The Crossbar Challenge.

Soccer AM is a British Saturday Morning football TV Show which is widely watched around the world. It features many skits about football and specialty features. One of these is called ‘the crossbar challenge’. It is quite a new feature to the show. On it, they take a weekly trip to the training ground of a certain British League football team. The whole team and sometimes even the coaches and managers are filmed, one-by-one, introducing themselves and attempting from the half way line to hit the crossbar of the goal. The challenge is rarely accomplished and most of the squads fail to even hit the crossbar once. The background music is normally “Seventeen Years” by Ratatat but has recently been changed to “Smiling” by The Beta Band.


The current record is held by Wolverhampton Wanderers who managed to hit the crossbar four times on April 25th 2009, beating the previous record of three set by Northampton town and Hereford United.


The current player record is held by Graham Stack who has managed to hit the crossbar two times for two separate clubs.


Soccer AM try to visit every team in the league but this becomes difficult for them as certain teams, such as Manchester United are unwilling to allow their players onto these type of shows.


The first ever manager to hit the bar is former Huddersfield Town manager Andy Ritchie. Wolves’ manager Mick McCarthy’s shot hit the crossbar and then bounced off and struck up the right when Wolves took part in the challenge. This has never been repeated.

The Premier League.

The Premier League is an English professional league for association soccer clubs. At the top of the Enlgish football laegue system, it is the countrys primary football tounament. It involvoes 20 clubs and it operates on a system of promotion and regulation with the football league.

The premier league is a corporation where the 20 member clubs act as shareholders. The Season runs from August to May, with teams playing 38 games each totalling 380 games in the full season. The League is sponsored by Barclays Bank so is therefore officially known as the Barclays Premier League. In the League, the games are played on Saturdays and Sundays with only a few games being played on the weekdays .

Overall, 43 clubs have competed in the Premier League, but only four have ever won the title. They are: Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal and Chelsea. The current champions are Manchester United who are pictured above. It was their eleventh Premier League title and they won it in the 2008-09 season, more than any other team ever competed in the Premier League. Chelsea currently hold the record for most points in a season, while Arsenal are the only team in the history of the Premier League to go unbeaten in a full season. Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United are known as the big four in the Premier league, even though Liverpool have never won.

The FIFA World Cup.

The FIFA World Cup, which is also known as the Football World Cup, but more commonly known as the World Cup is an international football competition contested by the men's national teams of the members of Federation Internationale de
Football Association (FIFA).
The Competition has been played every four years since the first competition in 1930, except for in 1942 and 1946 because of World War II.


At the moment, the format of the tournament is that it involves 32 teams competing for the cup at stadiums within the host nations over the period of one month. This period is usually called the World Cup Finals.
There is also a qualification period which takes place over the three years. This qualification period is used to decide what teams will qualify to the tournament with the host nations. The world cup is the most viewed sporting event in the world, with an estimated 715.1 million people watching the 2006 final from Germany.


The 2006 world cup was hosted in Germany. All of the major teams's stadiums were used for the world cup final matches.


Even though the tournament has been played 18 times, only seven nations have ever won it. Brazil happen to be the only nation that have qualified for ever tournament and have won it five times. Italy, being the current champions, have won four times. Germany have won three titles. Uraguay and Argentina have won it twice each and England and France have one once each.


The 2006 world cup was held in Germany. The next world cup is being held in South Africa between June 11th and July 11th 2010. The 2014 world cup will be held in Brazil.

The world cup 2010 qualifiers have been played over the last year and now the 32 teams to play in South Africa 2010 have been decided. There was a lot of controversy over Thiery Henry's blatent handball for France against Ireland while setting up a goal

History of Soccer

Association Football, which is more commonly known as Football or Soccer is a major sport both played and supported all around the world. It is a team sport, with eleven players on each team. The game is played with a spherical ball filled with air and made out of leather or another 'suitable material'. Soccer is said to be the most popular sport in the world.

Soccer originated in England in the 19th Century. It was mostly an effect of the industrial revolution as it drew in families from the city to the outdoor activities of rural life. It became common for them to take part in these outdoor activities and was often played on Sundays in addition to their religious activities. British traders, sailors and workers spread sport and football all over the world through their colonies.

Association football or soccer as we know it today was molded in the 1960's. Increased media and television coverage made the game of soccer more popular than it ever was. Air flights became the main mode of transport to different countries, rather than ships, because it was more efficient to conduct international matches.

Jules Rimet was president of the French Football Federation and FIFA at the time of the first world cup. The original first world cup trophy was named in honour of Rimet.
